A pattern is only as useful as its instructions and sizing range. This guide covers the most-recommended corset patterns with honest assessments of each.

Truly Victorian Patterns
TV100 (1860s corset) and TV101 (1880s corset) are among the most historically accurate Victorian corset patterns available commercially. Published by Truly Victorian, they include detailed construction instructions and are available in a range of sizes. The instructions are thorough enough for intermediate sewers. Available at trulyvictorian.com. Difficulty: Intermediate. These are not beginner projects — they assume knowledge of basic sewing and some experience with structured garments.
Laughing Moon Mercantile
LMM #100 (Victorian Corset) is widely considered one of the best-documented commercial historical corset patterns. The instructions are extensive and the pattern is well-tested. Available in multi-sizes. LMM patterns are known for the quality of their historical research and construction documentation. Available at laughingmoon.com. Difficulty: Intermediate to advanced.
Simplicity and McCalls
Major pattern companies offer corset and corset-adjacent patterns at lower price points ($15–25). Simplicity 9769 (underbust) and similar are accessible to confident beginners but are not historically accurate and use less rigorous construction than dedicated corset pattern companies. They are appropriate for fashion corsets and introduction to corset construction. They will not produce a historically authentic result.
Free Patterns
Silverado Corset Pattern (available free online) is a widely-used free underbust pattern that has been the starting point for many corset sewers. Bridges on the Body patterns (some free) provide well-drafted historical options. Free patterns vary significantly in quality — cross-reference any free pattern against construction resources before cutting fabric. The corset community on Reddit (r/corsets) and Foundations Revealed are good resources for pattern reviews.
Adjusting Patterns for Non-Standard Figures
Most commercial patterns are drafted for standardized measurements. Adjustments needed for many figures: full bust adjustment (increasing circumference at the bust apex for overbust styles), lengthening or shortening (adding or removing length from the torso), hip spring adjustment (widening the hip panels for curvier figures). These alterations require some pattern-making knowledge. Foundations Revealed (a subscription corsetry resource) covers pattern adjustment in detail.
