Why Seasoning Matters
A new corset is constructed to a standard shape. Your body is not standard. The seasoning process allows the coutil and bones to gradually conform to your specific curves — the position of your hip bones, the shape of your waist, the angle of your torso. A corset that has been properly seasoned will fit you better, be more comfortable, and last significantly longer than one that was immediately worn at full reduction.
The Seasoning Schedule
Sessions 1–5: Wear the corset snug but not tight — approximately 1 inch of reduction. Duration: 1–2 hours per session. The corset should feel present but not restrictive. Sessions 5–10: Increase to 2 inches of reduction. Duration: 2–3 hours. After 10 sessions: The corset has begun to take your shape. You can progressively increase both reduction and duration, adding approximately 0.5 inches of reduction per week of regular wear. Fully seasoned: After 20–30 wearings, the corset has conformed to your shape and can be worn at its full reduction.
What to Expect
During seasoning, you may hear small sounds from the corset — the bones shifting, the fabric settling. This is normal. You may also notice that the first few wearings produce some wrinkling at the waist that gradually disappears as the corset molds to you. The corset will feel slightly different after each seasoning session — progressively more comfortable, more fitted, more like a second skin. This transformation is the point of the process.
Signs of Proper Seasoning
A properly seasoned corset sits smoothly against the body without wrinkles or gaps. The bones lie flat against the torso without poking or twisting. The top and bottom edges follow the body's curves without rolling. At full lacing, the garment distributes pressure evenly — no single point of more pressure than others. If your corset develops a wrinkle or bone position that persists after seasoning, this indicates a fit issue that seasoning alone won't resolve.
