A quality steel-boned corset is an investment. Proper care is straightforward — but getting it wrong, even once, can permanently damage a garment that should last decades.
The Liner Rule
The single most important care practice is wearing a cotton liner beneath your corset at every wearing. A thin cotton camisole or dedicated corset liner absorbs perspiration and body oils before they reach the corset. Perspiration is mildly acidic and contains salts that gradually degrade fashion fabrics and corrode steel bones over time. A liner garment costs almost nothing and dramatically extends corset lifespan. This is not optional for regular wearers.
Cleaning Methods
For routine maintenance: After each wearing, hang the corset open (busk unhooked, laces loose) in a well-ventilated area for several hours to allow moisture to evaporate. Spot cleaning: A damp cloth with mild soap handles most surface marks. Deeper cleaning: Hand-wash only, with minimal water, supporting the garment's structure throughout. Never machine wash — the agitation bends bones and can crack grommets. Never submerge steel-boned corsets — the bones will rust from the inside out. Never tumble dry. Lay flat on a clean towel to air dry completely before storage.
Storage
Store corsets either flat or rolled — never folded. Folding creates permanent creases in fashion fabric and can permanently kink bones at fold points. A rolled corset stored loosely in a breathable cotton bag preserves shape without compression. Avoid plastic storage bags (trap moisture). Avoid direct sunlight (fades and weakens fabric). Avoid damp environments (encourages mildew and rust). A drawer or dedicated box with tissue paper packing maintains shape well for long-term storage.
Maintenance Checks
Every few wearings, check: bone tips at top and bottom of each channel (replace any that have worked loose before the bone starts to poke through); grommet condition (look for cracking or pulling at the fabric around each grommet — reinforce with additional stitching before they fail); busk function (studs should click cleanly into loops with no lateral play); lacing cord condition (replace when fraying begins). Catching these small issues early prevents more significant damage.
