Lacing is the daily practice of corset wear. Mastering it makes the difference between a frustrating struggle and an efficient routine that takes two minutes.

The Bunny Ears Method
The standard method for tightening a corset: (1) With the corset on and the laces loose, find the midpoint of the lacing — the center, which on a properly laced corset forms two loops at the waist. (2) Pull both loops outward simultaneously — this is the 'bunny ears' action. The lacing tightens from the center outward, creating even pressure across the waist. (3) Once the center is at the desired tightness, adjust the upper and lower laces to distribute tension evenly from waist to top and bottom edges. (4) Tie off at center back with a bow.
Lacing Alone
Lacing without assistance: (1) Put the corset on loosely from the front, securing the busk. (2) Reach behind and pull the center bunny ears. (3) Secure the bunny ears with a temporary tie, then adjust the upper and lower sections. It takes practice but becomes routine. Many waist trainers use a door hook — a simple hook mounted to a door frame — to hold the corset in place while reaching behind. The key is patience: a properly laced corset takes 3–5 minutes when doing it alone, less with practice.
The Modesty Panel
A modesty panel (also called a modesty placket) is a fabric panel worn behind the lacing gap to cover the skin and the undergarment visible through the opening. It sits between the skin and the corset, held at the top edge or laced into the corset itself. For wearers who want the corset to appear closed-back, or who want to prevent skin irritation from the lacing cord, a modesty panel is an important accessory. Many corsets are sold with a matching panel; otherwise, a panel can be made from matching or contrast fabric.
How Tight to Lace
The appropriate lacing tightness is personal, but a good guideline: you should be able to take a full breath (expanding the upper chest, since the lower chest will be restricted), should not feel sharp pressure at any single point, and should be able to sit and stand without pain. For a new corset in the seasoning phase, only tighten until you feel the corset's presence — not until maximum reduction. Increase tightness gradually over multiple wearings as the corset molds to your shape.
